Kickstarting your Migration to Cloud

We offer cloud building services like lift and shift migration, readiness, and reengineering services, and cloud-native development services. We help you assess your current infrastructure components ,select a cloud service provider (such as GCP,AWS, Digital Ocean or Azure) define comprehensive, multi-step strategies to migrate applications and move to the cloud.

Before migrating to the cloud, it is essential to determine the current environment, its dependencies, types of servers and applications, licenses , assess cloud solutions and options, make an inventory of your existing resources, identify the current level of skills and select an architecture for your new cloud infrastructure.

As we have done this work, we have found that the approaches to migrating legacy applications to the Cloud tend to fall into four categories : Rehost, Refactor, Revise, Rebuild and Replace. It’s important to consider the following cloud migration checklist before taking action.

Rehost

This fundamental cloud migration strategy is to take the existing data and applications and rehost them intact in the cloud with the old application architecture running on infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). There is no need for any changes to the existing application, making this model the ideal approach for cloud migration strategy deadlines.

Replatforming

Falling somewhere between rehosting and refactoring, replatforming involves making some changes to an application while keeping some of its other core elements. Because of this, it’s sometimes referred to as “move and improve,” or “revise.” Replatforming can work for migrations from on-premises infrastructure to IaaS, as well as moves to a PaaS service.

Refactoring

This strategy, sometimes called “rip and replace” or “redesign,” is much more labor- and time-intensive than rehosting. It entails rewriting and restructuring the architecture of apps — and, potentially, data and schemas — either before or after migration; post-migration is more common.

Replacing

The final approach is to completely scrap your legacy application and use SaaS to customize and replace the legacy application. In this migration strategy, data is taken from existing on-premises applications and moved to cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) apps created by third parties, while the original in-house apps are discarded.

Phases of Your Migration

We may end up using a combination of approaches in situations where we are moving more than one legacy application to the Cloud, or moving a combination of functions to the Cloud. For example, we may rewrite a business-critical application, and replatform or “lift and shift” others.

The Migration Path

Assess

In this phase, you perform a thorough assessment and discovery of your existing environment in order to understand your app and environment inventory, identify app dependencies and requirements, perform total cost of ownership calculations, and establish app performance benchmarks.

Plan

In this phase, you create the basic cloud infrastructure for your workloads to live in and plan how you will move apps. This planning includes identity management, organization and project structure, networking, sorting your apps, and developing a prioritized migration strategy.

Deploy

In this phase, you design, implement and execute a deployment process to move workloads to Google Cloud. You might also have to refine your cloud infrastructure to deal with new needs.

Optimize

In this phase, you begin to take full advantage of cloud-native technologies and capabilities to expand your business’s potential to things such as performance, scalability, disaster recovery, costs, training, as well as opening the doors to machine learning and artificial intelligence integrations for your app.
